The requirements for the design qualification and type approval of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules suitable for long-term use in open-air climates are outlined in the standard IEC 61215-1-1:2016. The crystalline silicon terrestrial flat plate modules are the only ones covered by the standard. This standard's objectives are to identify the electrical and thermal properties of the modules and show that they can tolerate prolonged exposure in particular climates. This standard specifies testing procedures and requirements that are particular to PV technology and builds on the general testing criteria provided in IEC 61215-1:2016 and IEC 61215-2:2016.
