The test specifications for the design qualification and type approval of terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules are described in the standard IEC 61215-1:2021. It focuses on modules that can operate for extended periods of time in outdoor environments. The standard covers many different types of modules, including crystalline silicon and thin-film modules, but does not cover flexible modules used in temporary applications, such as awnings or tents.

In comparison to the first version, the second edition of IEC 61215-1, which was issued in 2021, includes a number of technical updates. These modifications include tests from IEC TS 62782 and IEC TS 62804-1 as well as test procedures necessary for flexible modules, like the bending test. Additionally supplied are definitions, sources, and guidelines for the design qualification and type certification of bifacial PV modules.

The addition of weights to junction boxes during thermal cycles, the requirement for retesting in accordance with IEC TS 62915, and the removal of the nominal module operating test and associated performance test at NMOT are additional changes in this edition.
