The circumstances and methods for monitoring the levels and spectra of noise within railbound vehicles are specified in the standard ISO 3381:2005. Except for active track maintenance vehicles, this standard is applicable to all types of vehicles traveling on rails or other permanent tracks. It's designed to be used while these cars are being type-tested and periodically monitored.

In order to accurately characterize and compare the internal noise levels of various vehicles on the same track segment, this standard aims to ensure that measurement findings are repeatable and comparable. The measurements' data might be used, for example, to evaluate and compare the noise levels inside various rail-bound vehicles or to comprehend the noise characteristics within a particular vehicle.

Engineering-grade (grade 2) test techniques with 2 dB precision are described in ISO 3381:2005. According to ISO 12001, this grade is advised for noise declaration purposes.
