Mechanical Vibration - Measurement and Evaluation of Machine Vibration - Part 8: Reciprocating Compressor Systems
Also Known As:
A standard called ISO 20816-8:2018 describes how to measure and assess mechanical vibration in reciprocating compressor systems. This standard's objective is to categorize the compressor system's vibration and prevent wear and tear issues in its parts, including the foundation, compressor, dampers, pipes, and auxiliary equipment. However, shaft vibration is not taken into account.
This standard is applicable to reciprocating compressors with rotational speed ratings between 120 and 1,800 r/min that are placed on firm foundations. The evaluation criteria given in the standard are largely for operational measures and verify that equipment that is directly attached, such as pulsation dampers and the pipe system, is not adversely affected by machine vibration. It should be noted that for reciprocating compressors operating beyond the designated speed range, different evaluation criteria may be required.
The reciprocating compressor's driving machinery evaluation, which is covered by ISO 10816, ISO 20816, or other applicable standards related to the intended task, is not included in the standard. It acknowledges that issues with internal machine parts like valves, pistons, and piston rings may go undetected by the evaluation standards. Such difficulties can call for additional diagnostic methods that are outside the purview of this standard.
The different types of reciprocating compressors (horizontal, vertical, V, W, and L-type), both constant and variable speed, driven by electric motors, gas and diesel engines, or steam turbines, with or without a gearbox, dry-running or lubricated, are examples of reciprocating compressor systems covered by this standard. This specification does not cover hypercompressors.
It is crucial to remember that this standard is not meant for condition monitoring and that assessing noise is outside of its purview.
