The IEEE Standard for Floating-Point Arithmetic (IEEE 754-2019) defines the formats and procedures used in computer programming environments for binary and decimal floating-point arithmetic. The standard specifies interchange formats and techniques, as well as exception scenarios and how they are handled by default. The standard permits a floating-point system to be implemented fully in software, hardware, or a combination of both.
The standard ensures that for the operations specified in its normative section, the numerical results and exceptions are uniquely determined by the user-controlled input data, sequence of operations, and destination formats. It strives to ensure consistency in floating-point number computation regardless of the hardware, software, or mix utilized in the implementation. Given the same input data, the computation results should be similar, and any faults or error conditions in the mathematical processing should be conveyed identically regardless of implementation.
