Standard EN SampleShort-Circuit Currents: Calculation of Effects. Definitions and Calculation Methods
Also Known As:
The mechanical and thermal consequences of short-circuit currents are covered by the standard BS EN 60865-1:2012, also known as IEC 60865-1:2011. It offers formulas for calculating the temperature effect on bare conductors as well as the electromagnetic effect on both rigid and flexible conductors. It only addresses AC systems and makes reference to other standards like IEC 60949 and IEC 60986 for the computation of effects on insulated conductors and cables.
The third edition of the standard, which replaces the second edition released in 1993, is a technical revision. It brings about a number of changes, including updated rules for automatic reclosure when used with stiff conductors. Now that the impact of mid-span droppers on the entire span has been taken into account, it is possible to calculate the displacement and tensile forces acting on lower fixing points, especially for vertical cable connections. There are also additional requirements for foundation loads brought on by tensile pressures.
The standard's structure has undergone several modifications, and some symbols have undergone revisions to conform to the conceptual traits of global standards. It should be noted that IEC 60909-0 now contains the requirements for heat impacts on electrical equipment, which were deleted from the standard.
