Standard EN SampleStandard Test Method for Static Leaching of Monolithic Waste Forms for Disposal of Radioactive Waste
Also Known As:
The ASTM C1220-17 standard offers a technique for determining a material's reactivity in a diluted solution by the leaching or dissolving of the test specimen. The materials that can be tested using this procedure include natural minerals, simulated waste materials, and radioactive waste materials.
The information gathered from this test can be included in a wider body of information to make long-term predictions about the behaviour of waste forms. By analysing changed surfaces and detecting solution concentrations, it can also be used to verify geochemical modelling algorithms.
To make it easier to compare test findings performed on various materials and at various laboratories, the standard defines specific reference test parameter values and leachant solution compositions. To characterise the specimen's reactivity, alternative test parameter values and leachant solution compositions might be used.
Except when testing extremely radioactive specimens, where deaerated solutions are required to reduce the effects of nitrogen radiolysis, the test can be carried out using either aerated or deaerated solutions. Although it is not a requirement for this test technique, controlling oxygen fugacity can be necessary for some applications of the test results.
The standard also offers suggestions for choosing containers that are appropriate for the test specimen, laboratory, and testing environment. For testing involving corrosive brines and radiation fields with absorbed doses greater than 104 rad, corrosion-resistant and radiation-resistant materials, respectively, should be employed.
