Standard EN SampleProcedure for Determining Audiograms in Toothed Whales through Evoked Potential Methods
Also Known As:
The use of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) to acquire audiograms from toothed whales, specifically odontocetes, is described in the ASA S3/SC1.6-2018 standard. By using sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) tones to elicit the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), the most popular AEP method enables the identification of frequency-specific hearing thresholds in odontocetes. Trains of tone bursts are another method for inducing the ASSR.
The standard offers techniques for calculating the ASSR in odontocetes that is produced by SAM tones and tone-burst trains. This also offers guidelines for selecting the right stimulus waveforms and calibrating the stimulus. To ensure uniformity in the experimental setup, the standard includes specifies configurations for electrode placement and stimulus delivery. The standard also establishes minimal criteria for reporting acoustical and electrophysiological noise, ensuring that the outcomes are accurate and trustworthy.
